WHAT IS ORTHODONTICS?

Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry focused on the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of misaligned teeth, bit patterns, and jaws. The need for orthodontic treatment can result from genetic and/or environmental factors. Proper diagnosis involves taking photographs, x-rays, and/or dental impressions, which enable the orthodontist to make informed decisions about what treatment is necessary. Treatment typically lasts from a few months to 24 months or more, depending on age and the complexity of the patient’s case. The functional and aesthetic results of orthodontic treatment can be dramatic. In addition to beautiful smiles, patients often see improved dental health and an enhanced quality of life.

DOES MY CHILD NEED ORTHO?

SEVEN is the magic number here! Dr. Woo echoes the guidelines established by the American Association of Orthodontists by recommending that an orthodontic evaluation take place at age seven for all children. Early evaluation will allow him to determine the ideal time to begin any necessary treatment. Many progresive treatments are now available for patients seven to eleven years olds, that provide significant benefits, especially for those with jaw irregularities. Treating children with these types of problems during their growth stages allows Dr. Woo to achieve results that may not be possible when face and jaw bones have fully developed and may prevent certain conditions from worsening. Early treatment usually allows for a simplified and less invasive orthodontic treatment in adolescent years.

CAN OLDER ADULTS NEED ORTHO?

Yes! Orthodontics has the power to resolve life-long aesthetic and functional issues in the mouth even when the body has stopped growing. Especially with new technologies such as Invisalign and the Empowered Brace System, Dr. Woo is able to offer older patients treatment that fits their exact needs. Unsure if you need braces?
